Pomegranate husk scald is a brown, superficial darkening of the rind that develops during storage and transit, and it is the defect that costs Egyptian pomegranate exporters more money than any field problem. Fruit leaves the packhouse with a clean red husk and arrives eight to twelve weeks later looking bronzed and tired, while the arils underneath are often still perfectly sound. The buyer sees a downgrade. The exporter sees a load that was carried wrong.

Which pomegranate defects appear in transit and what causes each one?

Husk scald is not chilling injury, and the difference matters in a claim
Chilling pitting is sharp-edged, sunken and localised. Husk scald is soft-edged, flat and spreads across whole faces of the fruit. Chilling pitting means the reefer ran below 5 C and the temperature trace will prove it. Husk scald means the fruit was stored too long or too dry, and the trace will look clean. Surveyors who record both as skin discolouration make a claim impossible to settle, so ask for the two to be reported separately with photographs of each.
Carriage settings for Egyptian pomegranate
Nile Prime ships Wonderful in 4.5 kg cartons at 5 to 7 C, 90 to 95 percent relative humidity, with fresh-air exchange closed or near closed and a micro-perforated polyethylene liner in the carton. The liner does most of the work against husk scald: it holds a humid microclimate around the fruit without trapping free water. Fruit must be dry and cooled to within 2 C of its set point before the doors close. Loading warm fruit and asking the reefer to pull it down produces condensation, and condensation produces Botrytis.
Ship early in the window if the destination is far
Pomegranate holds well for eight to twelve weeks, but the scald risk is not linear. It rises sharply after about six weeks in store. A GCC buyer at 6 to 9 days transit can accept fruit that has already sat three weeks. A northern European or Far East buyer at 18 to 24 days cannot, because the fruit will be in week seven before it reaches the shelf. Match the storage age of the lot to the length of the voyage rather than treating all fruit from the same pick as interchangeable.
