Kent is the variety many of our buyers ask for by name, and for good reason. It carries a soft, nearly fibreless flesh, a rich flavour, and a colour break that photographs well on retail shelves. Fruit profile
Kent is a mid to large oval fruit with a rounded base. The skin is green to greenish-yellow with a red to orange blush over the shoulder that deepens as the fruit matures. The flesh is deep yellow to orange, juicy, and minimal in fibre, with Brix running 14 to 16 degrees at eating-ripe, which makes it a favourite for retail programs where eating quality drives repeat sales. Kent fruit runs 450 to 700 grams across the counts we ship.
Sizes and counts
We size Kent by count per 5 kilogram carton. Kent fills counts 7 through 12: count 7 is 670 to 775 grams, count 8 is 590 to 670 grams, count 9 is 530 to 590 grams, count 10 is 460 to 530 grams, and count 12 is 385 to 460 grams and suits multi-buy retail packs. Gulf wholesale takes counts 7 to 9, where the larger fruit carries a premium; European and UK retail concentrates on counts 10 and 12 for the shelf unit price. Counts 11, 18 and 20 are not packed. Telling us the count band up front lets us hold the right fruit from the grading line rather than substituting later.
State the count and the carton format together. The same fruit that is a count 8 in a 5 kg carton is a count 7 in a 4.5 kg carton, so convert any competing offer to grams before comparing price.
Carton and pallet format
The working format is a single-layer 5 kilogram telescopic carton with moulded trays and foam sleeves. Cartons are vented for cold-chain airflow. A 5 kilogram box is available at the same net weight and a lower packaging cost, and a 4.5 kilogram carton is offered on request.
A standard pallet builds to 200 cartons in the 5 kg format, or 180 in the 5 kg box. A 40-foot high-cube reefer takes 20 standard pallets plus one euro pallet, 21 in total, so a full load runs 4,160 cartons and 20,800 kg net in the carton, or 3,744 cartons and 18,720 kg in the box. A 20-foot reefer takes 10 standard pallets: 2,000 cartons and 10,000 kg net. Maximum payload is 25 tonnes on either unit.
Maturity and ripening
Kent is harvested mature-green to first colour for export and shipped under a controlled cold chain. On arrival, the fruit ripens evenly over several days at ambient temperature, or faster in a ripening room held around 18 to 22 degrees Celsius. Because the flesh softens smoothly, Kent handles the sea route to the Gulf and to European ports well when the cold chain is respected from packhouse to discharge. Ports and terms
We load from Alexandria, Damietta and Sokhna, and quote FOB or CFR under Incoterms 2020 so you can compare offers cleanly. Peak Kent weeks run August to October, and the peak is narrower than the full export window.
